Which of the following is a quadratic polynomial in xx?

A straight line, a parabola and an S-shaped cubic curve with their names
  1. x3+4x2x^3 + 4x^2
  2. 2x−72x - 7
  3. 3−x+4x23 - x + 4x^2
  4. x2+1xx^2 + \dfrac{1}{x}
Show the answer

C. 3−x+4x23 - x + 4x^2

A quadratic polynomial has degree 2, i.e. it has the form ax2+bx+cax^2+bx+c with a≠0a\neq 0. 3−x+4x23-x+4x^2 has highest power 2, so it qualifies (the order of the terms does not matter). x3+4x2x^3+4x^2 is cubic, 2x−72x-7 is linear, and x2+1xx^2+\frac1x is not even a polynomial because 1x=x−1\frac1x=x^{-1} has a negative power.

33 is a zero of p(x)=x2−x−6p(x) = x^2 - x - 6. What is the other zero?

A number line with the zero 3 marked and the caption: other zero = ?
  1. −2-2
  2. 22
  3. −3-3
  4. 11
Show the answer

A. −2-2

Sum of zeroes =−−11=1=-\dfrac{-1}{1}=1, so the other zero is 1−3=−21-3=-2. Check with the product: 3×(−2)=−6=ca3\times(-2)=-6=\dfrac{c}{a}. Slips: 22 ignores the sign of the product, −3-3 just negates the given zero, and 11 stops at the sum without subtracting 33. Direct check: p(−2)=4+2−6=0p(-2)=4+2-6=0.

The sum of the zeroes of kx2+2x+3kkx^2 + 2x + 3k is equal to their product. Find kk.

A balance with the sum of zeroes on one pan and the product on the other
  1. 23\dfrac{2}{3}
  2. −32-\dfrac{3}{2}
  3. −23-\dfrac{2}{3}
  4. 32\dfrac{3}{2}
Show the answer

C. −23-\dfrac{2}{3}

Sum =−2k=-\dfrac{2}{k} and product =3kk=3=\dfrac{3k}{k}=3. Setting them equal: −2k=3-\dfrac2k=3, so k=−23k=-\dfrac23. Slips: 23\frac23 drops the minus sign of the sum; −32-\frac32 comes from inverting wrongly (k=3−2k=\frac{3}{-2} instead of k=−23k=\frac{-2}{3}); and 32\frac32 makes both slips at once.
