The bottom rung (step) of a ladder is 6060 cm long. Each rung above it is 22 cm shorter than the one below it. How long is the 15th rung from the bottom?

A ladder whose rungs get shorter going up
  1. 30 cm
  2. 88 cm
  3. 32 cm
  4. 28 cm
Show the answer

C. 32 cm

Here a=60a = 60, d=−2d = -2 and n=15n = 15, so an=a+(n−1)d=60+14×(−2)=32a_n = a + (n-1)d = 60 + 14\times(-2) = 32 cm. Using ndnd instead of (n−1)d(n-1)d gives 3030 cm, the 16th rung, because only 1414 steps are needed to reach the 15th rung. Using d=+2d = +2 gives 8888 cm, and 2828 is just 14d14d without adding aa.

Which term of the AP 5,12,19,26,…5, 12, 19, 26, \dots is 187187?

Number line with hops of 7 starting at 5
  1. 27th
  2. 26th
  3. 28th
  4. 25th
Show the answer

A. 27th

a=5a = 5, d=7d = 7, so 187=5+(n−1)×7187 = 5 + (n-1)\times 7, giving n−1=1827=26n - 1 = \dfrac{182}{7} = 26 and n=27n = 27. Forgetting the +1+1 at the end gives 2626, while 2828 and 2525 come from slips in adding or subtracting 11.

Find the 20th term from the last term of the AP 3,8,13,…,2533, 8, 13, \dots, 253.

Boxes 3, 8, 13 and 248, 253 with the last term highlighted
  1. 153
  2. 98
  3. 148
  4. 158
Show the answer

D. 158

253=3+(n−1)×5253 = 3 + (n-1)\times 5 gives n=51n = 51. The 20th term from the last is term number 51−20+1=3251 - 20 + 1 = 32 (not 3131), so a32=3+31×5=158a_{32} = 3 + 31\times 5 = 158. Alternatively reverse the list: a=253a = 253, d=−5d = -5, and a20=253−19×5=158a_{20} = 253 - 19\times 5 = 158. The value 153153 is the 21st from the last, 9898 is the 20th from the start, and 148148 is the 22nd from the last.
