Sample questions

A straight wire AB is turned slowly around the point P on a circular wire. In one position, it just touches the circle at PP. How many points does a tangent share with the circle?

A line pivoting about a point P on a circle, touching it in one position
  1. 00
  2. 11
  3. 22
  4. Infinitely many
Show the answer

B. 11

A line that meets the circle in two points is a secant. As the second point slides towards PP the two points coincide, so a tangent is the special case of a secant with exactly one common point (the point of contact). A line with no common point is a non-intersecting line.

A circle has centre OO and radius 55 cm. Point AA is 33 cm from OO, point BB is 55 cm from OO and point CC is 88 cm from OO. Count the tangents through each point separately. In total, how many different tangents to the circle can be drawn through the points AA, BB and CC?

A circle with point A inside, B on the circle and C outside
  1. 66
  2. 22
  3. 33
  4. 44
Show the answer

C. 33

AA is inside (3<53<5): no tangent. BB is on the circle (5=55=5): one tangent. CC is outside (8>58>5): two tangents. Total 0+1+2=30+1+2=3. The traps: treating every point as outside (66), thinking an outside point gives one tangent (22), or thinking an inside point gives one (44).

XYXY and X′Y′X'Y' are two parallel tangents to a circle with centre OO. They touch the circle at PP and RR. Another tangent ABAB touches the circle at CC. AA is on XYXY and BB is on X′Y′X'Y'. If AP=4AP=4 cm and BR=9BR=9 cm, find the radius.

Two parallel tangents and a third tangent AB touching the circle at C
  1. 6.56.5 cm
  2. 66 cm
  3. 1313 cm
  4. 97\sqrt{97} cm
Show the answer

B. 66 cm

Tangent lengths: AC=AP=4AC=AP=4 and BC=BR=9BC=BR=9. OAOA and OBOB bisect the angles at AA and BB, whose sum is 180∘180^\circ, so ∠AOB=90∘\angle AOB=90^\circ and OC⊥ABOC\perp AB is the altitude to the hypotenuse. Hence OC2=AC×BC=36OC^2=AC\times BC=36 and r=6r=6. Traps: the average 4+92=6.5\frac{4+9}{2}=6.5, the sum 1313, or 42+92=97\sqrt{4^2+9^2}=\sqrt{97}.
