Sample questions
Which part of the atmosphere changes in amount? It is usually between 0.1 and 0.4 per cent of the air, and it plays a big role in forming clouds and precipitation.
- Argon
- Carbon dioxide
- Nitrogen
- Water vapour
Show the answer
D. Water vapour
Water vapour usually makes up about 0.1–0.4 per cent of the atmosphere, but the amount changes from place to place and day to day. When it condenses it forms clouds and precipitation. Nitrogen and argon stay almost constant, and carbon dioxide is only about 0.04%.
A large jar holds 500 litres of dry air. Using the composition of the atmosphere, about how much of this air is nitrogen?
- 78 L
- 105 L
- 390 L
- 39 L
Show the answer
C. 390 L
Nitrogen is about 78% of air: 78 L just copies the percentage, 105 L is 21% (that is oxygen), and 39 L comes from dividing by 1000 instead of 100.
Mumbai receives 183.4 cm of rain a year. About what percentage of it falls in the four monsoon months, June to September?
- About 61%
- About 4%
- About 24%
- About 96%
Show the answer
D. About 96%
June–September . 61% uses only June and July, 4% is the share of the other eight months, and 24% comes from using the monthly average instead of the total.
