Which statement about the image formed by a plane mirror is wrong?
- It is virtual and erect
- It is the same size as the object
- It is real and inverted
- It is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front
Show the answer
C. It is real and inverted
A plane mirror forms an image that is virtual and erect, equal in size to the object and as far behind the mirror as the object is in front. It is also laterally inverted (left and right swap). Saying the image is real and inverted is wrong: the rays only appear to come from behind the mirror, so no screen can show it.
A girl stands 2 m in front of a plane mirror and then walks 1 m towards it. How far is she now from her image?
- 1 m
- 2 m
- 3 m
- 4 m
Show the answer
B. 2 m
After walking 1 m she is 1 m from the mirror. Her image is also 1 m behind the mirror, so the gap between her and her image is . Traps: 4 m is the separation before she moved, 3 m comes from adding the 1 m walk to 2 m, and 1 m is only her distance from the mirror.
A convex rear-view mirror has a radius of curvature of 3.00 m. A bus is 5.00 m in front of it. Where is the image formed?
- +2.14 m, behind the mirror
- +1.88 m, behind the mirror
- +1.15 m, behind the mirror
- −1.15 m, in front of the mirror
Show the answer
C. +1.15 m, behind the mirror
Here and . So , giving (behind the mirror, virtual). Traps: 2.14 m uses , 1.88 m uses , and m is a sign slip. The magnification is (erect, diminished).
