Sample questions

An electron carries a charge of 1.6×10−19 C1.6\times10^{-19}\ \text{C}. About how many electrons make up one coulomb of charge?

A box holding one coulomb of electrons next to a single electron
  1. 6×10186\times10^{18}
  2. 1.6×10191.6\times10^{19}
  3. 1.6×10−191.6\times10^{-19}
  4. 6×10−186\times10^{-18}
Show the answer

A. 6×10186\times10^{18}

N=1 C1.6×10−19 C≈6.25×1018N = \dfrac{1\ \text{C}}{1.6\times10^{-19}\ \text{C}} \approx 6.25\times10^{18}, so nearly 6×10186\times10^{18} electrons. 1.6×10−191.6\times10^{-19} is the charge of one electron, not their number, and the powers of ten with the wrong sign are the typical slips from dividing by a small number.

A current of 0.5 A0.5\ \text{A} flows through a bulb filament for 1010 minutes. How much electric charge flows through the circuit?

Charges flowing through a wire past a cross-section
  1. 5 C5\ \text{C}
  2. 1200 C1200\ \text{C}
  3. 300 C300\ \text{C}
  4. 20 C20\ \text{C}
Show the answer

C. 300 C300\ \text{C}

From I=Q/tI = Q/t we get Q=ItQ = It. Time must be in seconds: 10 min=600 s10\ \text{min} = 600\ \text{s}, so Q=0.5 A×600 s=300 CQ = 0.5\ \text{A} \times 600\ \text{s} = 300\ \text{C}. Using 1010 directly gives the trap 5 C5\ \text{C}; dividing tt by II gives 1200 C1200\ \text{C}; and 10/0.5=2010/0.5 = 20 comes from the same slip with minutes.

A 12 V12\ \text{V} battery is connected across an unknown resistor. A current of 2.5 mA2.5\ \text{mA} flows. What is the resistance of the resistor?

A 12 volt cell connected to an unknown resistor with a milliammeter reading 2.5 milliamperes
  1. 4.8 Ω4.8\ \Omega
  2. 4800 Ω4800\ \Omega
  3. 30 Ω30\ \Omega
  4. 2.1×10−4 Ω2.1\times10^{-4}\ \Omega
Show the answer

B. 4800 Ω4800\ \Omega

I=2.5 mA=2.5×10−3 AI = 2.5\ \text{mA} = 2.5\times10^{-3}\ \text{A}, so R=V/I=12/(2.5×10−3)=4800 ΩR = V/I = 12/(2.5\times10^{-3}) = 4800\ \Omega. Using 2.52.5 directly gives the trap 4.8 Ω4.8\ \Omega; 12×2.5=3012\times2.5 = 30 multiplies instead of dividing; and I/VI/V inverts the ratio.
