The story opens with Ravi's mother putting tablets on a saucer and wishing that someone would invent 'Vitamin-M'. What did she want it to do?
- Improve old people's memories, since Grandpa had become forgetful
- Sharpen Grandpa's weak eyesight and hearing
- Help Ravi concentrate on his studies during the holidays
- Replace all the coloured tablets Grandpa had to take

A. Improve old people's memories, since Grandpa had become forgetful
She imagined a memory vitamin, Vitamin-M, to give old people to improve their memories. Grandpa had absent-mindedly taken a double dose of medicine and once got lost on a walk. He also could not see or hear well, but the vitamin she wished for was only for memory.
Grandpa took out a gift, and Ravi's mother reminded him that Ravi's birthday was three months ago. A moment later she flushed and gave a shocked, guilty look at the calendar. Why?
- She realised she had bought Ravi the wrong present
- She realised it was her father's own birthday, which she had circled on the calendar and then forgotten
- She was annoyed that Grandpa had wasted money on gifts
- She noticed that Grandpa had written the wrong date on the parcel

B. She realised it was her father's own birthday, which she had circled on the calendar and then forgotten
Grandpa's custom is to give a gift to every 'child' in the house on his own birthday. At the start of the year Ravi's mother had circled that date in red, yet she forgot it. So the person who doubted Grandpa's memory was the one who had forgotten, which made her flush (turn red) with embarrassment.
'My daughter needs some Vitamin-M, I think—for her memory.' Why is this remark by Grandpa so funny?
- It turns her own wish back on her: she wanted a memory vitamin for old people, yet she forgot his birthday
- Grandpa has mixed up his daughter with his late wife
- Grandpa is asking her to buy him more medicine
- Grandpa is complaining that the tablets she gives him do not work

A. It turns her own wish back on her: she wanted a memory vitamin for old people, yet she forgot his birthday
This is irony: the roles are reversed. Ravi's mother wished for Vitamin-M to help old people like Grandpa remember, but she is the one who forgot his birthday. The remark also shows Grandpa's sharp, witty mind, which is the opposite of the forgetful old man she believed him to be.
